Replace Plastic Bags with Eco Friendly Cow Dung Planters

Replace Plastic Bags with Eco Friendly Cow Dung Planters

Anyone who buys plants knows that most nurseries sell the little saplings in plastic bags. Once the plants are transferred to mud or cement pots, the plastic bags are discarded. They either end up in landfills or are burnt – causing pollution and harming the environment.

Even worse, many of these small bags just fly around and land in green patches where animals graze. The animals end up eating them and consequently die from stomach ailments. Similarly, the light weight plastic bags often fly into nearby water sources and end up in the stomachs of marine creatures.

BAKES(Edible Cutlery)

This innovation of edible cutlery was drawn from the following concerns:
1. Depletion of groundwater can be arrested by creating markets for less irrigation demanding crops such as jowar (sorghum). The edible cutlery is made from flours of this crop.
2. Demand for power from the agriculture sector does not commensurate its contribution to the GDP and on the contrary is creating pressures on other sectors, notably on the manufacturing sector. This is largely because of the faulty crop choices. This initiative could help in triggering the right crop mix (even districts with scanty rainfall are registering increasing trends in water guzzling rice crop).
3. The demand for plastic cutlery is increasing over the days. Plastic, a petroleum by-product is more harmful to human body because of the presence of several toxins and carcinogens. Its application as food consumption utensil enhances the chances of these chemicals to get into the human system.

No to plastic

Biodegradable Water Bottles Made From Algae

If you are looking to get rid of all of your plastic water bottles, then there may be a new unique solution involving a material made from algae. As first reported on by Dezeen, Ari Jónsson a design student, has combined red algae with water to create the world’s first biodegradable water bottle for Design March 2016. You may not be too thrilled about drinking out of a water bottle that has the appearance slime, but if you love the environment, and hate plastic, it’s your only option at the moment.

“I read that 50 percent of plastic is used once and then thrown away so I feel there is an urgent need to find ways to replace some of the unreal amount of plastic we make, use and throw away each day,” Jónsson told Dezeen. “Why are we using materials that take hundreds of years to break down in nature to drink from once and then throw away?”
